The exhibition Sebastião Salgado. Amazonia at the MAXXI in Rome, National Museum of 21st Century Arts from October 1, 2021 to February 13, 2022, is the only Italian stop of the photographic project. Salgado's exhibition is a total immersion in the Amazon rainforest, among the majesty of its vegetation, the power of the mountains, the roar of the waters, and the life of the indigenous populations that inhabit and protect it. Produced by MAXXI in collaboration with Contrasto, the exhibition is curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado, the travel and life companion of the great photographer. Global partner Zurich, sponsor Bulgarelli Production. After the Genesis project, dedicated to the most remote regions of the planet to testify to their majestic beauty, Salgado embarked on a new series of trips to capture the incredible richness and variety of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and the ways of life of its peoples, settling in their villages for weeks and photographing the different ethnic groups. The Amazon rainforest covers a third of the South American continent, an area larger than the entire European Union. This project lasted six years during which Salgado photographed the forest, rivers, mountains, and the people who inhabit it, recording the immense power of nature in those places and capturing, at the same time, their fragility.
