Verona Archaeological Museum at the Roman Theater

The Archaeological Museum at the Roman Theater is located in the historic center of Verona, in the Veronetta district near the Adige river. The Museum is housed inside Palazzo Fontana which exhibits Roman archaeological finds and serves as an entrance to the site of the Roman theater in Verona. The building is so called because of the name of the family who lived there until the eighteenth century. The Fontana family conducted the first archaeological excavations of the theater to which the entire discovery is due. Of great interest are the finds exhibited in the museum rooms. In particular, the section of the necropolis tells about the various types of burial adopted in Roman times. Among the most significant tombs there is the “tomb el medico” found in 1910. The ruins of the Gavi arch and the Arena amphitheater are evidence of Roman architecture and monuments. The most important room illustrates the history of the Roman theater of Verona and presents various reconstructions that have been hypothesized by various studies. In a showcase there are two eighteenth-century paintings with fantasy reconstructions of the theater seen from the Adige. Attached to the museum and the theater there is the Church of San Girolamo built in 1432 in which today the mosaics found are exhibited.
