Ducal Palace of Lucca

The Ducal Palace of Lucca is located in the city center and represents the political and administrative center of Lucca. The palace was built by Bartolomeo Ammannati, Filippo Juvarra, Lorenzo Nottolini and Francesco Pini. The Palace was used as a fortress and noble residence over the centuries. Of great interest is certainly the grand staircase built by the architect Nottolini. At the top of the staircase you can admire the decorated Gallery, with stuccoes and marble statues. The large Hall of the General Council of the Republic houses the fresco of the Liberty of Lucca by Pietro Testa and other grotesque decorations and sixteenth-century stuccoes. Palazzo Ducale now houses the Museum of the Risorgimento which includes the collection from 1821 to the First World War. Among the most important works are the flags of 1821 of the Carboneria, objects linked to the personalities of Giuseppe Garibaldi and Giuseppe Mazzini. In addition, clothes, everyday objects, weapons and letters are also of historical importance. The Museum has been reopened since 2013 after a phase of restoration and revision of the works on display.
