The first news relating to the Govone Castle dates back to 989, at the time a medieval fortress consisting of two buildings characterized by a square and a circular tower.

The current construction is the work of the Solaro Counts: Roberto, Grand Prior of the order of Malta, and his nephew Ottavio Francesco, to whom the architect Guarino Guarini dedicated the reconstruction project. The execution of the work was continued by his heirs, including: the Marquis of Breglio, Giuseppe Roberto Solaro; his brother, Antonio Maurizio Solaro, Grand Prior of the Order of Malta, and Luigi Giuseppe Ottavio Solaro, Count of Favria, who was responsible for completing the decorations of the castle and creating the spectacular staircase on the façade. In 1792, with his death of the Count of Govone Amedeo Ludovico Solaro, the castle passed to the State and, therefore, purchased by the Savoy family. In 1819 Carlo Felice of Savoy actively took care of the restoration and modernization of the residence, entrusting the direction of the works to the architects Giuseppe Cardone and Michele Borda. The Savoys retained ownership of the castle until 1870, the year in which it was sold to the Tedeschi banking house of Turin and subsequently to the Ovazza Segre lords. In 1897 the municipal administration purchased the castle by auctioning the furniture and objects in it contained in order to be able to cope with the huge expense. In 1997 the castle was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO as part of the circuit of the Savoy Royal Residences.
