The Royal Scottish Academy is a Scottish cultural organization that is concerned with the promotion of contemporary Scottish art as well as the creation, interpretation and appreciation of the visual arts through the staging of exhibitions, displays and events international cultural.
The Royal Scottish Academy was founded in 1826 by a group of eleven artists and offers a busy program of exhibitions but also grants scholarships, awards and residencies for artists living and working in Scotland.
Although the academy is located in the building known as The Mound in central Edinburgh, the RSA's historical collection which includes important works of art and an extensive archive of material relating to the history of Scottish art and architecture are on display at the Dean Gallery. and are available by appointment.
The Royal Scottish academy exhibits and displays are shared with the national gallery and other organizations such as the Scottish Artists Exhibition Society. The palace, designed by Scottish architect William Henry Playfair, has recently been refurbished as part of the Playfair Project and is also home to the National Galleries of Scotland.
