The National Archaeological Museum of Crotone opened to the public in 1968 and is one of the most important in Calabria. The building, designed by the architect Franco Minissi, is located on one of the bastions of the sixteenth-century city walls, a stone's throw from the Castle of Charles V, in the historic center of the city. an exhibition on two floors. On the ground floor the visitor is guided, according to a chronological criterion, to the discovery of the main historical stages of the ancient Greek city of Kroton, starting from the relationships with the indigenous communities pre-existing at the time of its foundation (second half of the eighth century BC), through the history of its athletes, doctors and philosophers, up to late antiquity. There is also an in-depth study on urban archeology and a section dedicated to the grave goods of the necropolis in the locality of Carrara.The second floor offers an overview of the settlements of the territory, Krimissa, Petelia, Makalla, geographical areas rich in mythical traditions and linked to fundamental cults for the Greek polis (Sirens, Philoctetes, Apollo Alaios). The exhibition itinerary continues with a section dedicated to the main sanctuaries of the city. Particular attention enjoys the sanctuary of the goddess Hera Lacinia at Capo Colonna with its treasure: the golden diadem and a fascinating and mysterious Nuragic boat made of bronze stand out for their beauty.
